June 2004
Roaming the Region
by
(aka Gloater), RVC Region 3
Another month, another RG. It sure is fun being in Region
3. This month (May) it was SEMMantics, another well-done effort. We take a
break in June and then it’s the Annual
Gathering in Vegas and the
Col-M-Pics in Columbus.
Well the dust has all but settled from ProxyQuest and like
I mentioned last month it pretty much looks like a done deal. Nationally, all
135 groups are now over 50%. Regionally, our 16 groups are all over 60% and our
overall region percentage is over 70%. You guys are awesome.
So where do we go from here? Over 25,000 Mensans have
responded to our call for help on this issue. Will they do it again for another
cause? The next national issue coming up is the election of officers next
year. It sure would be great if we can get that same number of Mensans to “go
to the polls” again. Last election, in Region 3 alone there were only about 400
votes cast for RVC out of over 5000 members. Not much of a representation. Now
if the 3000 or so that submitted proxies were to vote, that would be an
election.
Now that we have a good start toward a nominating
committee, we need to have candidates for office. There are 15 elected
positions on the AMC, of which you can vote for six (sorry, you can only vote
for one RVC). Hopefully, there will be dedicated members that will step up to
run for office. We need choices on the ballot. Just because current officers
are expected to run for current or higher offices is no reason to run
unopposed. Last election you had two positions you could vote for, some regions
only had one. I only hope that next year we can get a full slate with multiple
candidates and that the vote-count will be similar to what was achieved for
ProxyQuest. Maybe then we can get an AMC that is a true representation of the
membership. Don’t let the election of Mensa officials be determined by a
minority of its members.
Granted, it’s pretty early to be talking about 2005
elections, but be thinking about it. Requests for nominations will be starting
before we know it. Rest assured that I’ll be talking more on this subject in
future months (and you all know how relentless I was with ProxyQuest).
