Roaming the Region

by (aka Gloater), RVC Region 3

Another July Fourth ExtravAGanza has come and gone.  This year in Las Vegas I found it to be "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".

"The Good"

This year’s Region 3 awards consisted of:

2004 Publications Recognition Program – Website

Member Recruitment: Jason Cannon, East Central Ohio Mensa (ECOM)
Special Mention: James R. Whitson – Kentuckiana Mensa for Best Local Groups Link Page

2004 Publications Recognition Program – Artwork (print) Category

“Great Blue Heron”, Ray Frodey, Western Michigan Mensa

2004 Group of the Year Award (GOTYA) for Class II

  Columbus Area Mensa

2004 Outstanding Proctor of the Year for Region 3

  John Barnes, Blue Grass Mensa

National Chair Awards

  Bob Strauch, Southeast Michigan Mensa
  Gabe Werba, Southeast Michigan Mensa

Culture Quest Winners

3rd East Central Ohio Mensa: Uncle Churd
7th Western Pennsylvania Area Mensa: The Standard Deviants
17th Cincinnati Area Mensa: CAM Cads and Cadettes

Other “Goodies” were the Paris Hotel atmosphere and the fact that I was actually a $20 winner on the slot machines.

"The Bad"

With the lack of food other than minor munchies in Hospitality, dining around was extremely expensive.

There were some bargains to be found, but they were not readily advertised.  Also, the heat of the day and the cost of taxicabs prohibited external excursions of much length or distance.

"The Ugly"

Arriving early in the week, I attempted to use the local trolley that runs up and down the strip.  First I had to wait in the heat for 48 minutes for the arrival of the trolley that supposedly runs every 15 minutes.  By the time it arrived, it was pretty well packed and everyone was constantly badgered by the driver to move to the back to make room; nothing like 65 people on a 40-person bus.  This half-hour trip managed to take a little over two hours.

All things considered though, it was a pretty good AG.  The last attendance count I heard was slightly over 1800 people, the largest gathering of Mensans ever.  I’m already looking forward to the 2005 Annual Gathering scheduled for 6 – 10 July in my hometown of New Orleans.

On a final note, the NomCom is reviewing candidates for next year’s elections.  I met with members of this committee regarding my aspiration to serve the AMC in the position of Treasurer.  With the successful completion of ProxyQuest, I sincerely hope those of you who voted for our Certificate of Incorporation change will also voice your desires in this upcoming election.  Your votes are important.
