Summer 2003
Northern Michigan Mensa is a
year old! Jack Schultz sent in an update!
We enjoyed meeting Charlie and Terry when they were here to present our
newsletter editor (Tom Kachadurian) and me with awards from the AG (which
neither of us attended).
Anyway, August has been a very busy month for Northern Michigan Mensa, what
with five activities going on.
 |
Five members serving as phone
volunteers at Interlochen Public Radio's semiannual fundraiser (and getting a
nice radio interview with our publicity coordinator--Sue Styles--in the
offing). |
 |
All-day picnic and games in
Ludington, at the southwestern-most corner of our territory. |
 |
Great trip out to South Manitou
Island (14 miles off the Michigan mainland) on August 13 |
 |
Games night on the 15th where
Charlie and Terry were with us. |
 |
TSaturday, August 23, we celebrated
the first anniversary of the creation of Northern Michigan Mensa. Twenty-eight
people, including former RVC3 Rick Magnus, were at my home for that dinner and
social gathering. |
We also had a canoe trip in June and other activities that have got us
outdoors as well as inside for the usual stuff in restaurants and homes.

Island at an historic farmstead where the barn walls were made of chunks
of wood cemented together.

Celebrating our first anniversary!

On our fireplace you can see
picture boards I had set up which depicted some of our activities over this
past year.
Individuals are: Stephen (16-year-old Traverse City
Central High School junior and our Assistant Webmaster), then, left to
right, are Melissa, Sue (our Publicity Coordinator and new Proctor), and
Kelli. Former RVC Rick is in the back. |

Scattergories at our games night on August 15. |
Brunch in Traverse City with a nonagenarian

Ben (the 90-year-old
new Mensan) is shown sitting with our next-to-oldest member Norma. Ben is on
the far right side of the photo and Norma is right next to him.
There were 22 of us at this gathering in Traverse City, MI on Sept. 13.
As I wrote previously, I don't know if Mensa has taken in many new members
who qualify at the age of 90. Norma is 83, and she has been a member
of Mensa longer than any others of us in Northern Michigan Mensa. The two
live at the same retirement community in Traverse City.
|
| We have just
welcomed into Northern Michigan Mensa a new member, name of Ben Stout, who
may well be among Mensa's "elite" insofar as his age is concerned. When I
tested him in July, he was 90 years old, and he has now officially joined.
I suspect Mensa has quite a few nonagenarians but how many of them actually
joined when they were 90? |
